wrt the NZ govt's "The Digital Strategy"

At this point there's not a lot in it for us directly. However I'm in
the process of getting a couple of educational projects moving and I've
been invited to address the New Zealand Computer Society. NZCS
administers the ICDL in NZ. One of the things I'll be addressing is
either doing ICDL with OOo or getting NZCS backing for INGOTs.
On [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'll forward some comments from our state ICT
educators list where they were discussing ICDL.
On June 1, I'm attending an All Party conference on Software patents in
Wellington that has been set up by the NZOSS. Present will be the
Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy.
NZOSS are doing some good things, particularly wrt their Educational
group/project (http://www.nzoss.org.nz/wiki/EducationGroup).
I've been talking to people about a Maori native language project but
I'm caught in the middle of a political mire based on an inter-Iwi
rivalry (Iwi is sort of like tribe.). It seems that if I get one
institution to do an NLC, another won't use OOo because it will be
"wrong". This goes both ways. The fact that the differences in written
Maori are almost negligible doesn't seem to matter. Heh! It is mildly
amusing while at the same time being somewhat frustrating, but oh well!
The problem is of course, that it is EXACTLY the sort of project that
would get funding but I won't get funding without an academic
institution attached!
We have a similar/same issue here in Australia. I read/heard some where
that there are only 200 out of 600 indigienous languages left, and very
few fluent speakers. There is activity to retain these languages but it
appears to be more prevelant in states other than Western Australia.
Did I say I love my job! ;)
:)
Cheers
Yo
BTW how are all the injuries? See I knew Linux Confs were dangerous. ;)
I've got a few challenges ahead :-/ And no it is not Linux confs that
are dangerous as I didn't even get to LCA 2005 ;-p I put it down to
going to sleep in Canberra :)
Thank you for thinking of me.
I have a couple of postcards on my fridge. One has a picture of a couple
of rock hopper penguins, see:
http://www.lockett-photography.com/20010119%20New%20Island/19%202%2030%20Rockhopper%20Penguin%20pair%20rev%2020030114%208x10%20l.jpg
Printed across the top of the card "Relax Pinky... In these outfits
they'll never guess we are Australans" and across the bottom
"Linux.Conf.Au 2006 Dunedin, New Zealand and the LCA 2006 logo, see:
http://lca2006.linux.org.au/ Note: There was some robust discussion
about holding LCA (Linux Conference Australia) in NZ.
The slogan on the other postcard may well be applicable to OOoCon 2005
with perhaps a different image. The picture is some king penguins
trudging along, see:
http://www.lockett-photography.com/20010120%20Falklands/1%2035%20King%20Penguins%20rev%2020030114%208x10%20l.jpg
and across the top of the card it reads "Darn it George... I told you to
book the flights early! and across the bottom the LCA 2006 logo again
with "If you can't fly you'll have to walk to Linux.Conf.Au 2006
Dunedin, New Zealand" :)
I'll transfer this conversation to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list as I
think some e-cards and or postcards would be useful.
Regards
Jacqueline
