Here is a quick update on the state of play with the INGOTs.

We have approximately 50 High Schools in the UK either in the process of
doing INGOTs or with them built into their development plans which are
linked to their funding. In most cases each of these high schools has 4
or 5 feeder schools that will also be certificating children through the
scheme.

In Poland Wojciech Domalewski informs me that he is in the process of
training about 40 assesors. We also have definite presence in
Serbia/Montenegro, New Zealand, USA and Venezuela where I have trained
assessor trainers (ie people authorised to train other assessors) and in
Australia and Romania where I need to go. We will have assessor trainers
in Slovenia and Czech Republic in a couple of weeks time. I'm going to
Australia to the Linux Conf there in April so that should sort out
Australian assessors.

We have now got My First INGOT written and the strategy is that 5-7 year
olds that achieve this become members of OTTO's club. We will develop a
section on the INGOTs website www.theINGOTs.org with problems and
puzzles for members of the club.

The website is being completely overhauled to make it easier to cater
for different languages. We now have a discussion forum on the website
for assessors and any people interested.

So given that we only really fully got going in September, I think
things are going well. All students going through INGOTs will be
knowledgeable about Open Source and copyright issues and they will all
have taken part in some support or development activities for the
OpenOffice.org community. Apart from this we will generate an income
stream to fund development priorities not covered by Sun. At the moment
all income is being put back into developing the project but there
should be scope for at least some modest donations to the project before
too long.

Regards,
