It's better to ask such questions in mail-lists, but anyway let me answer:
1) First of all you don't need to explicitly specify _root_ field. It's done
internally by solr.
2) {code}?q={!parent which=is_parent:true}*:*{code} gives you an exception
because child query must never match parent docs!
But {code}*:*{code} breaks the constraint because it matches both child and
parent docs. You can try:
{code}?q={!parent which=is_parent:true}is_parent:false{code}
