I don't have a lot to say about most of your email, but this part caught my attention.
I was under the impression that Lucene 4.1 made BlockPostingsFormat the default, and that Solr also uses this default. Is this not the case? I know that other things made default - compressed stored fields and compressed term vectors - are reflected in Solr 4.1 and 4.2 respectively.
