The problem has to do with my inability to understand/use Python ... the host I'm using has python3 == 3.9, which I think isn't new enough. At one time I had been using pyenv to get access to a newer version, but this was somehow overriding PATH and replacing whatever java I configure with /usr/bin/java (which is some ancient version on this system). So I think this has nothing to do with Lucene, it's just some horrible setup. I need to run the smoketester somewhere else or get the system working better I guess
