Another possible direction: Actually this is needed for a Solr specific feature
(so far as I know,) so Solr bundled Luke (here is the issue:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-13412) could have the support for
HDFSDirectory? It's just an idea...

> Support non-FS based directory implementation such as Solr's HDFSDirectory

> Project: Lucene - Core
> Issue Type: Improvement
> Components: modules/luke
> Reporter: Tomoko Uchida
> Priority: Major
>
> This is a migrated issue from previous Luke repository on GitHub:
> I have dropped the feature to support Solr's HDFSDirectory when porting Luke
> UI from Thinlet to JavaFX/Swing to drop the dependencies on Solr and Hadoop.
> I'm not sure how many people rely on this Thinlet Luke feature, but would it
> be possible to "inject" or "plugin" custom non-FS based directories when
> opening directory or starting up Luke?
> For now I have not yet deeply studied how to implement, just wanted to hook
> the issue here.
