thanks [~mikemccand] I attached a new patch. I am aiming to push this tomorrow
unless anybody objects. One think that I realized is that we can't utilize this
for index sorting since fields that participate in the sort can't be updated.
But I think that is not a major issue. //cc [~rcmuir]
