[~ichattopadhyaya] we _shouldn't_ hit this situation at all and if cores is 
null, at some point, the request should fail fast, before it even gets to that 
line. Adding that line there only transforms the Exception from NPE to 
SolrException for the user, which is a better experience but not correct.
Unless we know when/why would this happen, I'm against masking the error.
