Found the cause, which is that the edgepoints are insufficient for some cases 
of intersection of the xyzsolid and the planet.  For some reason I only thought 
there could be two disconnected shapes of intersection, but on reflection I 
realized there can be at least six (one for each plane).  Rethinking that logic 
overnight to be sure it's right.
