Patch which folds in Noble's changes. I think its ready.
If there are no objections I will commit this to trunk tomorrow and wait a few
days before backporting to branch_5x.
Also the patch would be slightly different on branch_5x as lucene checksums are
not guaranteed to exist since there can be pre 4.8 segments
