One thing I'd encourage everyone to start on sooner rather than later is a 
placeholder doc on the https://cwiki.apache.org/MAHOUT/algorithms.html page 
that captures some of your background material as well as some links to your 
JIRA issues.

Also, while it's not required, you might consider filing an iCLA: 
http://www.apache.org/licenses/icla.txt  Again, not a requirement of GSOC or 
anything like that.
