Hi Eike,

Is that because of the ill-defined French keyboard that uses the '.'
instead of ',' on the numeric keypad? ...

Yes, that's it or something very near that.

... If so, please take a look at menu
Tools.Options.LanguageSettings.Languages and in that dialog checking the
"Decimal separator key" should do what you're looking for. ...

This has absolutely no interesting effect on my computer.

... If it is not
for the keyboard reason I would be interested in why you would like to
change the separator.

On the one hand,

In OpenOffice, regional settings have been already stored. This is a good idea
because
users are not compelled to manually define each parameter. But a free software gives
"the
freedom to adapt it to your needs" (freedom #1 according to the "free software
definition"
by the FSF). Therefore, as a matter of principle, we should be able to freely
define the
decimal separator and the other regional parameters as well, exactly as it is
possible to
do in the Windows Control Panel dialog "Regional and Language Options".

On the other hand,

On my notebook, there is no numeric keypad and I don't want to connect a USB
keypad
because an additional device would handle badly when I work in a train or a
plane. I have
to type in digits with capitals locked and the decimal separator with capitals
unlocked.
Lock, unlock, lock again, and so on... This is so tedious, so tiresome. A
solution to fix
the decimal separator problem would be to select another locale in OpenOffice
but this
would generate a problem with the thousands separator. Perhaps a specific
locale plus a
specific cell format would do it ? I say no because it would be time consuming
by
comparison with Excel.

For those reasons,

I really want to set the '.' as the decimal separator in the French environment
and keep
every other parameter unchanged. Thus, I could type in numbers easily and when
I send a
Calc document to anybody, the decimal separator would be seen as '.' or ','
according to
the locale which has been selected on the target computer.

Finally,

I do hope my explanations are understandable (English is not my natural
language as you
suspect), and I do hope you can do something for me or you can tell me what I
have to do
to solve this problem which really drives me mad.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards.
