It does not need to be a blocker but would be good to get it in as it makes the
offset management APIs a lot easier to use. This is mostly done in KAFKA-1013
but I would like to separate out the client in that patch. If this ends up
being the last blocker we can move it out but if we have enough cycles to get
it in we should.
