Dongnuo Lyu created KAFKA-21201:
-----------------------------------

Summary: Store less classic member metadata in
ConsumerGroupMemberMetadataValue
                 Key: KAFKA-21201
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-21201
             Project: Kafka
          Issue Type: Task
            Reporter: Dongnuo Lyu

ConsumerGroupMemberMetadataValue stores the full classic member metadata
(session timeout and the protocol list with metadata bytes). Protocol metadata
bytes are only used to fill the classic group on downgrade when no rebalance
has happened since the group was reconstructed

The proposal is to keep only the protocol names (plus what is needed to rebuild
the metadata, such as version and user data), or drop the metadata and force a
rebalance on downgrade when a member's metadata is missing from the soft state

Compatibility is the main concern. Storing the full metadata means the broker
never has to generate it. An old broker may not know how to handle the version
the consumer uses. Any change must also stay compatible with records already
written in the old format.
