Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Colin has made a good point about the supporting for non-stream applications, where silent downgrade is harmful and could make false promises to users. Matthias also made a good point about utilizing the internal flag to safe-guard in case non-stream users would also like to be alerted when the broker downgrades unexpectedly.
To address concerns around producer API consistency, I would like to propose a combined solution for Streams internal usage only, by adding an internal flag auto.downgrade.txn.commit which could enforce a silent downgrade behavior on the protocol level when set to true. As this is an internal flag, no producer/consumer public facing apps shall be affected, while at the same time, Streams could still survive from crashing as an advanced user who "is aware of the danger". And we don't have to backport in 2.5 either, as Streams were not using new transactional APIs in the current release. What do you think?
