Swarnim Kulkarni created HIVE-3312:
--------------------------------------

             Summary: Improve Hive Map to HBase column family
                 Key: HIVE-3312
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HIVE-3312
             Project: Hive
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: HBase Handler
    Affects Versions: 0.9.0
            Reporter: Swarnim Kulkarni

The documentation states the following way to use a map to access a whole
column family:

CREATE TABLE hbase_table_1(value map<string,int>, row_key int)
STORED BY 'org.apache.hadoop.hive.hbase.HBaseStorageHandler'
WITH SERDEPROPERTIES (
"hbase.columns.mapping" = "cf:,:key"
);

Now since we are mapping map<string,int> to the hbase column family cf, it
makes a very crude assumption that all columns in the column family cf are
expected to hold a int value which may be always be the case. This strategy
should probably be improved to support different types of values stored in
columns under the same column family.
