I've attached the hive.log I get from running

ant test -Dtestcase=TestCliDriver -Dqfile=index_auto_test_if_used.q
}}}
I still am only seeing input formats of
org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.io.HiveInputFormat and
org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.io.CombineHiveInputFormat
But, the good news (I guess) is that the splits exception also happens when
using the index manually
