I think a new function could be written to push the monitor type to the left menu when the user adds the first monitor of some kind. I don't think this would consume a lot of time for the user, as there is no bulk import involved that would trigger this function. And I think when the user is adding some kind of monitor, he must want to show the category of this monitor directly on the left side, otherwise the user's action is unnecessary. Manually hiding it is something that can be done as part of the tutorial if the user wants to hide it.
