Hi all,

I work on Apache TinkerPop, and we're moving the Gremlin Console onto Groovy
6's groovysh. I noticed two differences in groovysh between Groovy 4 and Groovy
5/6, and I couldn't find a reason for these changes. I wanted to check whether
the new behavior is intentional or if these might be bugs.

  1.
Multi-line inputs with trailing dots. In Groovy 5 and 6, it’s evaluated right
away:

groovy> "abc".
MultipleCompilationErrorsException: startup failed:
Script1.groovy: 1: Unexpected input: '.' @ line 1, column 6.
groovy> toUpperCase()
MissingMethodException: No signature of method: toUpperCase ...

In Groovy 4, the same input gives ABC.

  1.
Assignment results. In groovysh 4, an assignment like x = 5 printed ===> 5. In
5.0.8 and 6.0.0, nothing is printed, though the variable is set.

We depend on both of these behaviors in TinkerPop, so I was wondering if these
are bugs that can be fixed in Groovy 6. If they are intended changes, we'll
look into implementing a custom solution on our side.

Thanks,
Iryna
