Hello everyone,

On behalf of the PMC, I’m happy to let you know that Ramin Gharib has accepted the invitation to become a Flink Committer.

Ramin has been a dedicated contributor to the Flink ecosystem over the past two years. Based on the project statistics, Ramin has authored 89 PRs, commented on 279 PRs, and worked on 6 FLIPs spanning key areas of Flink SQL:

Materialized Tables (FLIP-546, FLIP-551, FLIP-557, FLIP-578): He has been a driving force behind the evolution of Materialized Tables. He introduced a single CREATE OR ALTER MATERIALIZED TABLE statement that creates a table or evolves an existing one, made the FRESHNESS clause optional, gave users granular control over data reprocessing when a table’s query changes, and proposed in-place conversion of regular tables to Materialized Tables.

VARIANT type hardening (FLIP-604): He added many improvements to make VARIANT production ready: completed the primitive type coverage for VARIANT by adding UUID and TIMESTAMP(3) types, fixing cast rules, adding built-in functions. Overall many type system related improvements to the semantics of Flink SQL.

He also contributed to the new CHANGELOG PTFs and implemented the OBJECT_OF and OBJECT_UPDATE built-in functions.

Beyond his code contributions, Ramin represented Flink at Community Over Code 2026 together with Sergey Nuyanzin, about “Enterprise-Grade Data Pipelines: The Evolution of Flink Materialized Tables”.

Please join me in congratulating Ramin for becoming an Apache Flink committer!

Best,
Timo (on behalf of the Flink PMC)
