Hi devs,

We just had our first release sync, and here's a summary of it.

## TL; DR

   - We will release a preview version around the end of September. Please
make sure all API breaking changes are finished by that time.
   - We are in progress of updating the work item lists on wiki page [1].
Developers please add new features that you'd like to work on in this
release cycle, and update the information and status of existing items that
you're responsible for. I'll also reach out to people for status
   clarification.
   - The next release sync will be on 14:00, Aug 21, BJT (GMT+8). Please
check the Google Calendar [2] for your local time.

## Preview Release

We decided to have a Preview Release before the formal 2.0 release. As
mentioned in [3], the preview release would allow people, especially
partener projects, to adapt to the API breaking changes early, and provide
feedback for us before we commit to the compatibility of these APIs in the
formal 2.0 release.

The preview release would take place at the *end of September*, and *should
include all API breaking changes* (mostly removal of deprecated APIs).
There won't be comprehensive release testing for this preview release, but
will still be a PMC vote (as required by ASF).

If you have problems finishing the API changes by the target time, please
reach out to the release managers.

## Time Plan

The target time plan for the 2.0 release is as follows:

   - *Preview Release: End of Sep, 2024*
   - *Feature Freeze: End of Nov, 2024*
   - *Release: End of Dec, 2024 or Early Jan 2025*

## Work Items

We will have 2 work items lists:

   - Breaking changes: Items are expected to be finished by the preview
   release.
   - Features: Items are expected to be finished by the feature freeze. We
apply the same time-based rules as previous releases. Features not finished
by the feature freeze would be postponed to the next release.

We are working on separating and updating the existing work item list.
Please help add new features that you'd like to work on, and also update
the status of existing items that you're responsible for. The release
managers will also reach out to relevant contributors for status updates.

We will also try to identify work items by scanning for deprecated APIs
(@Becket) and JIRA tickets labeled for release 2.0 (@Xintong).

We will go through the work item lists in the release sync next week.
Hopefully, we'll have most of the information updated by that time.

For any other questions, please feel free to reach out to the release
managers.
Looking forward to your feedback.

Best,

Xintong (on behalf of the release managers)
