Hi Chesnay, I created FLIP-44 two months ago.
Originally, the discussion of local aggregation feature happened in the ML thread.[1] After many people agree with this feature, I created an umbrella issue and split into some subtasks and opened one PR. However, @Aljoscha Krettek <aljos...@apache.org> thinks it's a big feature and worth to create a FLIP, so I created FLIP-44 and closed the PR. Then, I started a new ML thread about FLIP-44[2] in the dev mailing list. Unfortunately, we did not come to an agreement on the design. I will re-active it soon.
