Looking at FlinkYarnClientBase#deployInternal(), null return is possible:

} catch (IOException e) {
LOG.error("Error while setting the default " +
"filesystem scheme from configuration.", e);
return null;
}

We should check the return from deploy() before calling connectToCluster().
