Well we are certainly not preventing users from using Java 8, but we are not 
forcing them to update.
I would strongly advise not to raise the barrier for libraries higher than we 
need them to be. Even if I agree that people should update, but some simply 
can't. I am currently working on a big project targeting 1.6 ... even have to 
support one project glued to 1.5 :-(

In an ideal world you are right ... unfortunately we live in a far than ideal 
one ... so let's not make it harder than it already is :-)

Security wise, I think we should be allowing the latest Java's to be used.
