Just and FYI if this happens to you: Had this happen now twice today. First time I deleted the entire .metadata directory (rather than a full install). While that worked, it meant I had to reset my preferences. The second time I deleted .metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.safetable (I did not see .snap on the mac). This also worked and preserved my preferences.
Thanks for the tip about .metadata - did not want to have to re-install FB again.
