encoding error, what you see depends on your email client's encoding. i'm seeing 2 mojibake that says "encoding mismatch" quite loudly (my email client encoding defaults to unicode). latin-1 users will see the superscripts.
i *think* you can set the encoding to something more palatable ("just use unicode") via preferences->composing->preferred encoding for new messages.
