If I can give an opinion on that:  

I don't think the DateFieldSpinner is adapted to desktop use.

Make this simple test:

- think of any date.
- time how much it takes to select it using the regular DateChooser
- time how much it takes with the DateFieldSpinner.

My own tests show it's between 1.5 and 2x slower...
