The way I see it you need to find the part of the project that makes you feel happy to work on. It could be anything because there are many exciting things going on at the moment. You could start messing with new cutting edge stuff and help with them or you can find an existing bug and try to fix it. Since you're not commiters you will have to get familiar with how patches and the bug tracker (JIRA) work. Once you find something to work on and you have created something you need to show to others, you can create a patch and submit it to a specific issue that either you or someone else has created.
Hopefully one of the commiters will review your patch and tell you if there is something you should change in it. That's the process of contributing without many details. The list is super-busy and I'm sure that if you have more specific questions there will be someone to help with them.
