Hey all, The RailsGirls Summer of code happens again this year and applications for projects close in eleven days.
RGSoC is like Google Summer of Code, except that for a focus on students, they focus on getting women* in technology. We’ve participated with Hoodie last year and it was a great success. Each project gets at most one team, so coaching overhead is a lot less as with GSoC. In addition, RGSoC teams come with their own support group and external coaches, so it is a lot more likely that something comes of the project. And I bet we could apply separately for CouchDB and Fauxton, since they are vastly different projects. If you need more convincing: over the past four years, 90% of RGSoC applicants have found a steady job in IT, many of them switching careers. I’ve witnessed a number of these transitions and they are one of the prouder moments in my open source life. Before you ask, despite the name, RGSoC is open for all open source projects, regardless of the programming language. Here’s the application procedure: http://railsgirlssummerofcode.org/guide/projects/ Should CouchDB participate? Who’d be up for coaching?
