I think it's a great idea. Though I think the scope of it is probably a bit too open-ended. I think the right thing to do here is not "let's have guilds" but "let's make it easy to discover, join and participate in those guilds we have (and create new ones)".
I think we already have some guilds, but they are not easy to discover and understand that they are actually there already. Those are just a few I participate in: * bui...@apache.org * legal-disc...@apache.org * plann...@apachecon.com * public-affairs-priv...@apache.org * bo...@apache.org Those are all really the "guilds" you are talking about - people interested in the subjects that often exchange information about the area they are interested in. Probably there are more I am not aware of / not participating in. My question is - are those easy to find? Do members/committers who are not members know they can join and participate in them ? Do they know how to discover them among the few hundreds mailing lists they can subscribe to? I am not sure. It took me personally a number of months to discover some of those and realise that I can be (possibly?) helpful in those groups and that there are things that are interesting there for me. Some of those I had no idea about that it's ok for me to subscribe to (board@ which I learned about when I was appointed as board candidate, planners@ when I was thinking "should we make another conference in EU?" - which I am now one of the chairs. Maybe that's ok. But maybe not - maybe we need something to advertise and publish those existing guilds to everyone in the ASF. Not sure. There is a balance on spamming people and passing them relevant information, so it's easy to "over-do" it. So maybe (just maybe?) the scope of this idea should be "how do we make it easier for everyone to discover, join and participate in those guilds that are already there and encourage other guilds to be created" ? Just my 3 cents, J.
