I've been wanting, for *years*, to write more best practice documentation for the various segments of our community. Recently I attended a talk about the "contributor ladder" - a concept used in CNCF communities. This is where you describe each rung of your climb through a community, with particular focus on: * The attributes of that rung (responsibilities, best practice, and detailed howtos) * How to get to the next rung Communicating to people how to progress up the ladder is critical to keeping people engaged. This is much like knowing what your potential promotion path is at a job, and how to improve your chances of promotion. People want to understand whether it's possible to become more involved and influential in a community, and how to go about it. This includes stuff like: * What's the bar to becoming a committer? (Note this is useful not only to the contributor, but it's important that the PMC has thought about this, and it's not either completely arbitrary, or overly benefiting one class of people, such as by employer, geography, or peer group.) * What's the criteria for a committer becoming a PMC member? (Some projects grant both at the same time, always. Others make you slog through hot lava for 3 years. What's important is that the PMC members know what the criteria are, and they're not arbitrary or unduly benefiting one class of people.) * What responsibilities are associated with being a PMC member? * How are decisions made in your project, and by whom? How can I become one of those people. We have, for a long time, relied on the Incubator to educate our communities. That's great, for the people who were there at the time. We need to do a better job of continuing education of the people that come to the project later on, or who have forgotten. ComDev is, IMHO, the place to do that. It's literally Community Development. This PR is a small part of how I see this working. I appreciate your consideration. I know it's a bit patch.
