Hi All I think that I have now got over the jetlag of attending COSCon 19 in Shanghai a couple of weekends ago. https://www.bagevent.com/event/5863699 I had great fun and I cant believe how fast the time went.
The event was organised by KAIYUANSHE, with the theme 'Let's cross the boundaries together' and was focussed on bringing together a range of open source foundations, projects and advocates and putting them into contact with exisiting and potential new contributors. Dave Fisher, Daniel Ruggeri and myself were invited to present and we had lots of questions as well as many people interested in participating in ASF projects or wanting to learn more. We also connected with many of the ASF contributors, committers and PMC members based in China. I gave a keynote (my first ever!) and participated in the Women in Open Source panel. Even being involved with the ASF for over 10 years I was very humbled and inspired by the women's stories and their dedication to open source. The evening event also fun and celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ASF with even more cake! A flag / banner was displayed showing all the Chinese initiated projects coming into incubation or graduated and I am guessing as a result of this event people will be motivated to make the list even longer. We also had the chance to meet people from other open source foundations, also wanting to connect with their Chinese contributors. Having a forum where we could chat to people from Github, Hyperledger, Gnome Foundation, LPI, FreeBSD was amazing. Daniel, Dave and I also participated in the VIP Round Table that brought together not only the foundations, but people from many of the companies involved in our projects as well as Chinese mentors and committers from a range of ASF projects. At the evening event, so many people wanted to say Hi and sit down and chat. One of the most unexpected topics for me - was talking to someone about how to promote their ASF project to attract contributors from outside of China as I went their thinking mainly about how to reach potential new contributors within China. I had a discussion on the different hats and the challenges of being employed to do open source at the same time as being part of a community. In terms of outreach I think this was an great success, In terms of connecting and networking with the open source community in China (just for the weekend) it was phenomenal. Well done and a huge thank you to Ted Liu and Kaiyuanshe for putting on a superb event that made everyone want more and to keep on talking.
