If you are interested in parallel and active projects, the Women outreach SIG within the GNOME project is a really interesting and successful case study. I haven't tracked them in real-time, so I'm surprised/pleased by one particular fruit of their efforts; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outreachy which Mozilla too turns out to be a huge champion of.
