SO the question remains - where did the address come from?
There does not seem to be a reference to it anywhere on the ASF site.

Agreed

However it appears there is an ambiguity here w.r.t. the catchall addresses.
The intention was presumably to detect mails sent to community-xyz@a.o.
The bounce message was set up accordingly.

However it looks like the same file also handles mails sent to xyz@community.a.o
The bounce message is not so appropriate.

I'll raise an INFRA JIRA when that returns.
