I'm also using slack for work in my new company. It makes sense for us as a lot of the activities imply real-time synchronization between members of teams spread around the world.
But as part of my job is to enhance the community supporting tools, I'm finding that slack is useful, but, as previously said, tends to fuzzy decision making and documentation, something that does not bode well with repeatable processes and knowledge consolidation. Search is limited 10k last messages for the free teams, so I'd recommend that if projects want to use it we look for a (donated or paid) comprehensive plan. That one of the key features they charge for is full searchability says it all about how important knowledge consolidation is in the contexto of collaboration...
