Hello Commons Compress maintainers, My name is Roland Kasza. I am a Java developer and the managing director of Basic Soft Bt., a small software company based in Hungary.
I am exploring an application to the Sovereign Tech Fund to carry out a substantial maintenance and improvement effort for an established Java infrastructure project. Commons Compress looks like a potential fit, and I would welcome your guidance on whether there are useful priorities I could help address. Possible areas include robustness when processing malformed archives, resource-consumption controls, regression testing and compatibility improvements. The scope would need to reflect your actual priorities and complement existing work and funding. For transparency, I intend to use AI coding tools extensively, potentially generating the majority of implementation code with tools such as Codex, Claude Code, Cursor or Grok. I would personally design the changes, review and understand all submitted code, test and debug it, check licensing and provenance, and document AI usage in accordance with ASF guidance and project requirements. The Sovereign Tech Fund has confirmed that AI may be used in development when its selection criteria are met. No funding has been awarded. Could you please advise: 1. Are there important, currently unfunded maintenance or improvement tasks that could form a coherent work package? 2. Would the AI-assisted workflow described above be acceptable to the project, subject to your normal contribution and review requirements? 3. If there is a suitable fit, would a maintainer be willing to discuss the scope and potentially endorse it for an STF application? I would be happy to familiarise myself with relevant issues and prepare a short technical outline for discussion. If funded, I could commit up to full-time development capacity. Thank you for your time. Best regards, Roland Kasza Managing Director, Basic Soft Bt. Hungary
