+1 on running it as `verify`, but we could also configure the Spotless
Maven Plugin to solve two issues at once:

- License headers as required by RAT,
- Code formatting as checked by the CheckStyle Maven Plugin and
individual preferences.

I use Spotless in Log4j and it has eliminated all formatting-related
code review comments. I am pretty much open to follow any style rules as
long as I can apply fixes with:

mvn spotless:apply
