Adding the workaround from
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6751920/tomcat-7-servlet-3-0-invalid-byte-tag-in-constant-pool
to the pom.xml:

<dependencyManagement>
  <dependencies>
    <dependency>
      <groupId>com.ibm.icu</groupId>
      <artifactId>icu4j</artifactId>
      <version>3.4.4</version>
    </dependency>
  </dependencies>
</dependencyManagement>

Solves the problem for me...
