Should have actually read the instructions [1]. The ignorePathToDelete configuration option seems to have worked for me, including a wildcard spec. For the faint of heart, you can also do mvn scm-publish:publish-scm -Dscmpublish.dryRunSorry to see what "mvn site-deploy" is going to do before you actually do it. Sorry for the noise...
