Yes, the information is needed, but the locations may vary. For example, I have just checked out the project, and enabled Maven on it. This has changed the .project file - added Maven builder and nature and also changed the .classpath file - added MAVEN2_CLASSPATH_CONTAINER and made other changes - changed the output directory Even without using Maven, I need to use a different JRE entry, because my default Eclipse JRE is not the same as the one required by the project. There are many other Eclipse plugins that change either the .classpath or .project file or both.
