I doubt I am any smarter than you, but I have had success in the past with
this sort of problem. Unfortunately, I do not anticipate having bandwidth to
work on this one for at least a month.
I will point out that recently when I looked at generifying certain other parts
of c.l.m, I found a few methods that I concluded were *inherently* type-unsafe,
and a few others that I could only make type-safe by discarding some of the
type information. I was never quite satisfied with my efforts, so I did not
submit
them. That all may be the proof that I'm no smarter than you, but my point
is that you may indeed have gotten about as far as it is possible to go.
If no one else steps up then I would be happy to review the work you have
completed on this, but as I said, I won't be available to start on that for
about
a month.
