Regarding the existing OpenContrail code that is in CloudStack. It is currently not functional. That said, Juniper is in the process of transferring OpenContrail to the Linux Foundation Networking under the new brand of Tungsten Fabric (TF).
We (CloudOps) have been supporting this transition at both the governance and technical levels, and are actively supporting the reboot of that project. It would be interesting to review what the best integration architecture would look like and scope the integration details. The TF community has been focusing quite a bit on the cloud-native (container) deployment scenarios, but there are a number of architectures which are possible. One of the interesting things about the TF project is their ability to connect together legacy networks with newer network overlays (such as cloud-native networking). If others are interested in integrating TF into CloudStack again, I would be willing to support that initiative in the ways I can. At the recent Open Networking Summit (ONS), I demoed the ability to expand a service mesh between two different Kubernetes cloud regions with the ability to do policy management across the hybrid cloud deployment. I used Tungsten Fabric and Consul Connect for the overlay networking, and I used CloudStack (with S2S VPN to connect the regions) as the networking underlay for the demo.
