The semi-unusual part about this PR, @rhtyd, is that is contains code
jointly developed by me and @syed.
He has reviewed my contributions and I have reviewed his.
We just need someone to review the entire thing. There's not a lot of code
there, so it shouldn't take too long, I suspect.
