I think it's a great idea. The current database upgrade path is indeed fragile and causes issues in multiple occasions. I would say we do this in what we call 5.0 and also switch to Java 8 at the same time :) Why 5.0? Well, we tell users that you gave to upgrade to 4.6 or 4.7 first and THEN you can go to 5.0 Going from <4.6 to 5.0 directly is NOT supported.
