I'm pretty sure that memory for a VM on ESX is stored as a file on the same
datastore with related VM files (including the root VMDK file).

It's not as clear to me how memory is stored for a XenServer VM. Perhaps
it, too, is stored as a file on the same storage repository as the root VDI.
