Hey Darren, For 4.2 we just committed to master and then cherry picked it to 4.2 ourselves. We tended to require a JIRA ticket to be associated with the commit(s).
As the release went on, the Release Manager took over cherry picking and would typically do so on our behalves, if we requested such an action.
