I don't know of anyone with plans to do this upgrade; with that said, if you're running into issues with the older version and want to contribute a patch, I at least would generally be in favor of trying to do this upgrade. We would need to be careful to keep it backwards compatible, though, or at the very least clearly call out where it breaks compat in the changelog (I'm not sure how much drift there will be).
