AFAIK this is how it worked for at least a year.
++version++ means "the not yet released version" (from the main branch). I
think it has been chosen because it is easier to search and replace when
cutting a release.
Maybe we should rename it to "current", "development" or "snapshot"
version, but then the release manager should be really careful not to
replace something unrelated.
