Condition of nightly builds - Raúl would like to remind everyone that the great conditions of the nightly builds prior to the 9.0.0 release were a major factor in a smooth release. - With the first RC planned for the 17th of October we should strive to fix the many nightly issues currently open, the issues have been marked as blockers and will show up on the release page [1]. - Up to date information for the nighlies can be found in the zulip stream [2] and the static dashboard [3]. Build Breaking PRs - In line with the previous topic Anja would like to discuss the handling and communication of PRs that have large impacts on the build system(s) of arrow and it's components. Recently a number of PRs changing the build system have been merged without any communication about it on the ML or in Zulip. - While these PRs are simplifying and improving the build system they also cause existing workflows/processes to break down suddenly with now announcement or easily accessible information, which makes for frustrating troubleshooting for both contributors and users of arrow. - Examples: removal of ARROW_PYTHON [4] [5] - Jacob adds that some of these PRs were merged without running any CB checks to test impact in different build/packaging scenarios. Will propose Guidelines for handling PRs on ML. Removal of features on MacOS PR CI - There is an issue with brew install times for PR CI [6] running so long that the job is canceled after one hour. - Negatively impacts development feedback loop. - Solution: disable big features (gandiva, s3) to speed up build times and reduce time spent on dependency installation. - No objections from the call.
