I realized the "torture line" was broken but managed to figure it out
myself :-)
I'm afraid it is more about the different versions of `sed` than the shell.
I vaguely recall having to use different escaping rules between GNU sed on
Linux and sed on a co-workers Mac. We finally went with extended regular
expressions on Linux. If this turns out to be the problem we'll need a way to
identify GNU sed.
